Over the summer of 2019, I completed my first internship at the renowned public relations agency, The Red Republic. Throughout the internship, one of my primary goals was to explore the differences between agency public relations and internal organisational PR teams, to decide which direction to hopefully take my career post-graduation.
In working for an agency, I now understand the process and packages available to clients and how they are managed. For example, a client who selects social media management, event management and brand activations will have monthly meetings with the Brand Manager to review work samples and discuss the direction and goals for that month. Throughout my studies, I had envisaged myself working for an agency as it allows public relations practitioners to work on multiple projects at a time, for a range of business models and marketing strategies.
In contrast, I have also learnt that it is not uncommon for clients to disagree on the creative direction for social media each month, which poses a risk to the retention of clientele if not handled in the right way. This can occur when the client believes the tone or imagery used is not aligned with their brand and the Brand Manager believes the messaging is more effective.
working for a variety of clients, I gained first hand experience in maintaining a good client relationship and how to become adaptable to each client’s specific needs and content guidelines. Social media is one of the primary public relations services engaged by the clients, therefore, copy-writing and the construction of monthly social media content for subsequent client review were among my foremost priorities. The key in finalising content for distribution is to listen to the client’s concerns and alter accordingly – finding a balance in ensuring the client is happy and the messaging is effective.
By extension, drafting press releases to support client pitching, researching and collating social media influencer databases, writing pitches to influencers and organically growing client Instagram pages were among other key responsibilities.

GoHawaii
GoHawaii are a Hawaiin Tourism Authority which looks to promote travel across the Islands of Oahu, Molokai, Maui, Lanai and the Island of Hawaii. The organisation has contracted The Red Republic to produce website and social media content to ensure the continual growth of the Hawaiian tourism industry.
GoHawaii has a distinct marketing goal -> To increase tourism in Hawaii.
To do this, the organisation has adopted a clear social media strategy to publish content that is visually attention-grabbing on social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram, which are platforms designed to ignite wanting from users by showcasing and profiling beautiful crafted imagery. The company uses high quality user-generated content rather than professional imagery as to produce authentic, non-idealised and credible content. Once the user has viewed the image, the caption’s purpose is to then provide educational and detailed information about the tourist hot-spots in the location.
Throughout the internship, my role was to draft social media posts and schedule them over two platforms; Facebook and Instagram. This included compiling spreadsheets of acceptable user-generated content (UGC) imagery and uploading to a platform called Spreadfast; a UGC database. By searching a stream, e.g. #alohaoutdoors, the program would locate the selected UGC under that hashtag. From there, I would conduct ‘Search and Requests’ which would involve commenting on the UGC Instagram posts and requesting to use it on the GoHawaii page. Once the imagery had been selected for the month and approved by the client, I would then research and draft captions.
In drafting the social content, it was important to review previous posts to match the tonality of the organisation, and adhere to the client’s image criteria. For example, when using UGC, it is important to only use high-res photo quality and refrain from including photo close ups of people and beach images that are too revealing. Hence, the process of producing social media content for a client such as this is a long process to ensure the content is approved for usage by the user, and drafted to the criterion of the client.
Below are some examples of drafted and scheduled content.

INSTAGRAM CONTENT
The December content for GoHawaii went through a number of drafts as the time of year was putting pressure on both the client and the agency to maintain interest among users. This particular month opened my eyes to the struggles of aligning creative direction in an agency setting, particularly on projects as fluid as social media. Nonetheless, GoHawaii is a fantastic client and very particular about communication guidelines, which provided me with the opportunity to compare what I had initially written with the style of writing the client was seeking.

Macquarie Shopping Centre

The Sydney Macquarie Centre is one of the largest shopping centre’s in the suburb of Macquarie, located just opposite Macquarie University. The precinct is dedicated to providing visually pleasing social media content, encouraging users to desire the showcased items and subsequently, increase foot traffic within the Centre. Macquarie’s social media content is largely directed to a female audience, which statistics show account for an approximate 79.3% of centre expenditure and a higher propensity to spend at 92.3%, according to recent market research in purchase behaviour in Australian Shopping Centres.
In working for the client, I drafted monthly social media posts and scheduled final posts on Facebook and Instagram. The Centre has generated a large following on its social profiles with continuing substantial growth rates, as a result of publishing relevant content using professional imagery. Part of my role in forming its social content was ‘regrams’ which refers to the compiling of retailer imagery as a basis for social content for the coming months. In this regard, shopping centres are in a unique position for marketing content, having easy access to a variety of professional photography each month and at no expense. In addition, the client utilised hashtag strategies to ensure the distribution of the content across a variety of users and demographics.

The Red Republic
Throughout my time at The Red Republic, social media was my foremost priority. The Red Republic understands that in this technological landscape, online presence is one of the most critical marketing and public relations strategies available to any growing business. As such, this service was one a vast majority of its clients would take advantage of. Each day was very similar, performing the same sorts of tasks for a variety of clients. Despite not being overly interested in pursuing social media as a future career focus, working on these projects each week exposed me to varying content guidelines and social media strategies. I believe that drafting content for vastly different clients has allowed me to develop my writing skills in different styles.
Each internship day would begin with a ‘Daily News Update’ sent to all staff. This task was set to ensure the entire team remains informed and up to date on local and international news. As a public relations agency and crisis communication specialists, it is integral that members of the agency are monitoring news media to ensure the publication of daily news does not affect client reputations, operations or otherwise.
Afterwards, I would complete ‘Follows / Unfollows’ for several clients in order to build their social following. This process involves searching competitors or similar service providers and following their followers, in an attempt to get them to follow back. This strategy feels personalised to the user and encourages them to return a favour. This strategy is very effective in exposing large numbers of people to the client’s content, pushing them towards problem recognition, further investigation and purchase decisions. In a PR sense, this could mean changing a person’s perspective of the company or industry to a positive outlook or simply aligning the organisation and the individual’s values, rather than sales outcomes.
For example, Paradox Roasters is located in The 4217 food precinct in Surfers Paradise is a cafe dedicated to committing to initiative in sustainability, support of Australian wholesalers, countries in crisis and fair work guidelines. This type of business can use follows / unfollows to increase foot traffic from locals or to identify the ideologies of individuals which are aligned to the initiatives of the business. In conjunction with hashtags, this method is extremely effective in targeting demographic and psycho-graphically fitting new customers whom will travel to reach the organisation.
Following these tasks, I would do the following;
- Develop influencer lists for client events
- Event organisation and logistical research
- Collate media contact databases
- Develop ideas or activation or stunts as part of client public relations campaigns
- Search and requests / sourcing of user generated content
- Copywriting for monthly social media plans
- Construct pitch emails to influencers to collaborate
- Draft media releases
- Promote client events across Brisbane Marketing event listing databases
- Collate and format information from client conferences to Excel spreadsheets to be used for subsequent campaigns
- Etc.
Please see below for general internship tasks;

Media Contact Database
Telum is a media database system which acts as a registry for companies, particularly used by event, marketing or public relations teams, to elevate public exposure of events, stunts or public news. At The Red Republic, I created a number of media lists for upcoming client events, such as a guest brief for a Topdeck media event. In the promotional career landscape, having industry connections with media professionals and journalists is integral in ensuring the best possible coverage of notable changes, however in larger cities, this may be difficult. In order to solve this problem, Telum acts as the media-only LinkedIn, from which The Red Republic often generates a bespoke media guest list.

Media Release: Urbex, Harriet Lane

Elevate your Home Design with the Scenic Slopes of Harriet Lane
Urbex’s latest housing project, Harriet Lane, has taken the residential market by storm as the exclusive enclave balances a tranquil, woodland getaway whilst remaining just minutes away from the necessities of urban living.
Tucked away in the stunning suburb of Oxenford, Harriet Lane features 49 lots across 7 hectares, with homes amongst idyllic elevated nature reserves, overlooking Commera River.
Enviably positioned, Harriet Lane offers a harmony between quiet serenity and close proximity to Gold Coast attractions, as current resident say Harriet Lane is very central, situated less than 10 minutes from Westfield Helensvale, Pacific Pines town centre and just 25 minutes away from the calm beaches of Southport and Surfers Paradise.
Harriet Lane’s unique location provides a bespoke opportunity for new home buyers to build upwards on the scenic slopes, giving owners the ability to maximise space and enjoy the magnificent views and natural greenery which decorates the Gold Coast.
Property owners Sam and Shirl say “most people can’t envisage building a house on a sloping block; however, we knew we were building something bespoke and different. Consulting a custom builder was the cornerstone in developing our dream home, as they allowed us to be at the forefront in design decisions and accommodated our requests as we workshopped our decisions throughout the entire process.”
The Australian residential market has shown trends in the inflation of housing projects on sloped land, whilst establishing itself as a cost-effective option for natural draining, ventilation, natural light and flexibility in structural design to accommodate varying degrees of slope. Moreover,
The Gold Coast City Council recommends maximising your building design according to the type of slope, solar orientation, best viewpoints and wind direction, ensuring your home design showcases the many assets of higher living, in consultation with registered architects, engineers and building designers.
